Our advice for choosing your insurance

What is the best car insurance in Luxembourg?

How much does car insurance cost?

For a good car insurance in Luxembourg, you generally have to pay between €60 and €80 per month, without bonus or penalty. However, the price varies greatly depending on two factors:

  • Your bonus or malus: in some cases it can halve the price of the insurance premium!
  • The value of your vehicle: the higher the value, the higher the price of your insurance.

The best car insurances in Luxembourg usually include good basic cover, such as :

  • Civil liability
  • Legal protection (defence and appeal)
  • Assistance (allowing breakdown assistance and repatriation in case of an accident)
  • Comprehensive coverage against all the risks of everyday life (fire, forces of nature, glass breakage, collisions with animals or game)
  • Coverage against theft of your vehicle.

A tip for choosing your car insurance: start by comparing the cover offered by the different offers in our selection, then ask for several quotes to be sure of getting the best value for money.

The cheapest car insurance in Luxembourg

It is possible to find car insurance for 30 € to 45 € per month without bonus or malus (which can bring the price down to 15€ or 20€ per month with a good bonus).

However, these insurances offer fairly basic cover. They include civil liability, legal protection, sometimes assistance and some essential cover. But some guarantees may be missing, such as cover against animal strikes or assistance in case of breakdown. Property damage in case of an at-fault accident is usually not included either.

You can choose to opt for a minimum insurance if you don't use your car very often. Nevertheless, it is important that you do not forget that, don't expect to be fully covered in the event of a claim. In some cases, don't expect to get any refunds either when you find a broken window or broken mirrors on your car.

If you drive a lot or if your car is expensive, we strongly recommend that you opt for an insurance that offers better coverage (see our "Top" or "Premium" selection).

Should you take out comprehensive insurance? (or "Casco")

In Luxembourg, "Casco" insurance ("Tous risques" for France or "Omnium" in Belgium) protects against material damage to the vehicle. In addition to all the essential coverages, Casco insurance can include interesting options, such as :

  • Replacement of your vehicle ;
  • Reimbursement of the new or second-hand value of your vehicle, under certain conditions (check the contract carefully before signing);
  • Reimbursement of personal effects damaged in the accident;
  • Reinforced legal protection (which accompanies you even in the event of an at-fault accident);
  • Driver's insurance, which protects you and reimburses you in the event of disability following an accident.

If you want to drive with peace of mind and be fully covered against the majority of risks, then these Casco insurances are for you. On the other hand, they are the most expensive car insurance policies on the market: They start at €90 or €100 per month (without bonus or malus). You could pay only £45 or £50 a month for these insurances with a very good bonus.

Why compare car insurance?

Finding the best car contract for your budget

In Luxembourg, car insurance prices are relatively similar from one insurer to another. On the other hand, for the same amount of money, the coverage and guarantees offered can be very different. It is therefore important to start by choosing the best coverage for your price range.

We recommend that you compare the coverages in the comparison at the top of this page and then contact the insurance company of your choice to ask for a quote. If you have a claim, you won't regret taking the time to compare offers!

Save money on your insurance policy

Different insurers have different pricing policies. Comparing their quotes can help you save money. Don't hesitate to ask for several quotes to get an idea of the market and find the best value for money for your car insurance.

Knowing your rights and getting reimbursed

In the case of small claims, few people ask for a refund. They often do not know their rights or the details of their contract.

By taking the time to compare offers on this site and comparing quotes, you will know the details of your coverage. You can assert your rights at the slightest loss. Nothing will escape you anymore!

How to choose an insurance for your car in Luxembourg?

Comparing cover against essential risks

In Luxembourg, the most basic car insurance includes at least civil liability (which protects you in case of an accident), basic legal protection (or 'Défense Recours', which will offer you assistance in defending yourself) and an emergency assistance number.

In the basic covers we also include all non-driving risks of the vehicle which may be common in different regions, such as :

  • fires
  • forces of nature (flood, hail, storm)
  • broken glass (broken windows).

In Luxembourg, such cover can be particularly useful. The floods in the summer of 2021 washed away many cars and underlined the importance of insurance against natural risks.

If a disaster strikes your vehicle, or someone breaks your windows, you will appreciate being covered and reimbursed for the damage you have suffered.

We advise you to check carefully for the presence of these essential covers before you choose your car insurance. Also, for your convenience, and if you can, choose an insurance policy that protects against theft and vandalism. You should also consider insurance against animal strikes (especially if you happen to drive at night on country roads - of which there are many in Luxembourg!)

Analyse your car insurance options

Some interesting services are offered as options by Luxembourg insurance companies. These services include, for example

  • The Joker Taxi A free taxi home if you've had a bit too much to drink in the evening (for example!)
  • The reimbursement of the vehicle : you are reimbursed for the new or used value in the event of total loss of the vehicle (if it is beyond repair)
  • Driver's bodily injury insurance : covering your medical expenses, costs and financial losses in the event of disability following an accident
  • Insurance against material damage to your vehicle: This insurance covers the financial loss of your car even if you are responsible for the accident.
  • A Joker allowing you to avoid a penalty in the event of an at-fault accident (only with certain Premium car insurances).

These options are publicly disclosed on each insurance company's website. We also display them on our online car insurance comparator. You can find our selections at the top of this page.

What you need to know about car insurance in Luxembourg

Is car insurance more expensive in Luxembourg?

Without bonus or malus, you have to pay at least 45 € / month for the most basic insurance in Luxembourg. In France, for that price, you could get a comprehensive insurance (or "Omnium" in Belgium). In Luxembourg, you will simply have :

  • a liability
  • a legal protection basic (defence and recourse)
  • some basic coverages (fire, acts of God, glass breakage), but not all.

In any case, it is important to compare the cover offered by each car insurance policy before committing yourself. Start by analysing the cover and then ask for several quotes to compare the rates charged by the different insurance companies.

Why is insurance more expensive?

In general, Luxembourg car insurances reimburse better than in France, Belgium or Germany. You will rarely have to pay excesses in the event of a claim. Reimbursements are also generally higher than in other European countries. So you will have better cover, but you will have to pay more every month.

Finally, you can deduct your liability premium from your tax return each year. In this way, you get back part of the amount you pay each year: your insurance costs you less in the end.

What is "Casco" insurance?

In Luxembourg, Casco" insurance is an insurance that covers all material damage to the vehicle. It is the equivalent of the "Tous risques" insurance in France, or "Omnium" in Belgium. Only the terminology is different! However, not all Casco insurance is the same. Remember to compare the coverages and then ask for several quotes to be sure of making the best choice, according to your situation and your budget.

How does the bonus-malus work in Luxembourg?

In Luxembourg, there are two bonus-malus systems different which are complementary:

  • The "Civil Liability" bonus-malus. It is determined when you cause accidents (or do not cause them). This bonus or malus applies only to the 'Third Party Liability' part of your insurance, which is the largest part of your premium. The scale is public and regulated by law.
  • The "Property Damage" bonus-malus. It changes every time your car suffers material damage. This bonus-malus is set freely by your insurer. It has an effect on the rest of the insurance premium (and not on the "Civil Liability" part).

So if you damage your car and report the damage, or if you have a small accident in a car park where responsibility is shared, you will not have any effect on the large part of your contribution, which is Civil Liability. However, your property damage bonus will be affected. Your insurance premium will increase accordingly.

How to calculate your bonus-malus for car insurance?

To calculate your bonus-malus in Luxembourg, please refer to this scale. This is the bonus-malus scale for car insurance, which goes from -3 (maximum bonus) à 22 (maximum malus). Each new driver starts with a basic bonus-malus, located at the 11. Next :

  • For every year without an accident, you save 10% on your civil liability.
  • For each accident in which you are responsible, your bonus-malus degree increases by 3 points. Above 11, you will have to pay an additional 5% on your civil liability. Beyond 15 (i.e. the 2nd accident with liability), you advance by increments of 10%.

To lose your malus, you will have to be patient: 3 years without an at-fault accident to erase the effect of a single accident you caused.

If you are moving to Luxembourg for the first time, the insurance company will probably ask you for a certificate from your previous insurer in order to convert your foreign bonuses into a Luxembourg bonus.

Bonus-malus: what difference does it make to the price of car insurance?

The bonus-malus system is more advantageous in Luxembourg than in other European countries. In France, for example, the malus is applied to the entire premium you pay. This means that you pay an extra charge on your entire insurance premium every time you have an at-fault accident.

In Luxembourg, the malus linked to accidents is only applied to the "Civil Liability" part of your insurance. The effect of a bonus or a malus is therefore more limited than elsewhere. However, the effect is still significant, as Third Party Liability represents a large part of the price of car insurance. For example :

  • With a bonus-malus level of 7 (i.e. 6 years without an accident since obtaining your licence), you can save more than 450 per year on your civil liability
  • With a bonus-malus level of 17 (i.e. 2 consecutive at-fault accidents after obtaining your licence), you will have to pay more than 250 per year on your civil liability

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the cheapest car insurance?

The cheapest insurance with the best cover is the one that appears in our 'Eco' ranking and that has cover deemed 'essential' for good protection in Luxembourg. This means you will be covered against all the essential risks, at an affordable price. However, remember to compare the cover of all insurances before buying a cheap car insurance.

Which insurance should I choose for my car?

If you are looking for the best value for money in Luxembourg, choose one of the insurances presented in our "Top" category. These are offers that provide comprehensive cover at a reasonable price. If you want to save money on your car insurance, choose our "Eco" section: you will find cheap insurances and an overview of the main guarantees offered. Finally, if you want the best cover on the market, check out our "Premium" section: this is a selection of insurance policies with comprehensive cover and great extras.

Which car insurance pays the best?

All car insurance policies pay out very well, as long as the loss you suffer is covered by the guarantees offered in the policy you have taken out. That's why it's important to compare them carefully beforehand: make sure you're covered against as many risks as possible.

What is the best online insurance?

In Luxembourg, two insurance companies offer to calculate your rate online: Foyer and Bâloise. You can thus make an initial simulation of the price of your car insurance. However, the price and coverage will be personalised with an insurance agent who will contact you to finalise the contract.

Why should you insure your vehicle?

Insuring your car is essential to cover you against damage you may cause to others, or that may be caused to you. In the event of an accident, the insurance company will pay all the material costs. If you did not have insurance, you would have to pay out of your own pocket. And the amounts can be considerable...

Third party or comprehensive, how do I choose my car insurance?

Third-party insurance covers you against the risk of damage caused to you by others. Comprehensive insurance, or 'Casco' in Luxembourg, or 'Omnium' in Belgium, also covers you in certain cases when you are at fault. It also covers many material damages caused to the vehicle, and can even offer you additional guarantees (full driver protection, reinforced legal protection, etc.). If you are not comfortable with driving a vehicle, we recommend that you take out a Casco insurance policy in Luxembourg.
