How to Switch Electricity Supplier in Luxembourg: Complete Guide 2026

Switching electricity provider in Luxembourg is free, uninterrupted and effective within 24 hours since 1 January 2026. Based on electricity simulations carried out on Switchr.lu in 2026, the annual gap between the most expensive and the cheapest offer presented to a median profile (3,500 kWh/year, 3 kW subscription) was €86 VAT included per year. In other words, for identical consumption and equipment, the choice of provider accounts for just over 10% of the annual bill.

1. Why switch electricity supplier in Luxembourg?

Since the full liberalisation of the electricity market in 2007 (Law of 1 August 2007), every Luxembourg resident can freely choose their electricity supplier, regardless of commune. The physical network — cables, meter, fault management — is managed by the local distribution network operator (mainly Creos), independently of your supplier. Switching supplier has no impact whatsoever on your physical installation.

The most common reason to switch is simply to pay less: on a market with no regulated prices, differences between suppliers on the energy component can be meaningful depending on your consumption profile. Other valid reasons include switching to a 100% renewable electricity offer, accessing a dynamic tariff to manage a heat pump or EV, or dissatisfaction with your current supplier’s customer service.

If you are currently on default supply — common among recent arrivals who haven’t yet signed a supply contract — you are paying a tariff that is legally higher than market offers. The ILR explicitly recommends signing a market contract as soon as possible. You have six months (for low-voltage customers) before default supply ends automatically.

2. Who can switch and under what conditions?

In Luxembourg, all residential customers can switch supplier freely, without notice and without fees, in the vast majority of cases. A few situations are worth checking before starting the process.

Open-ended / variable contract

The most common situation
  • Cancel at any time, no notice period
  • No exit fees
  • New supplier handles everything
  • Switch effective within 24 hours (since Jan. 2026)
VS

Fixed-term / fixed-price contract

Check your conditions before acting
  • Early exit fees may apply
  • Only if explicitly disclosed before signing
  • Free exit if supplier notified a price change (30-day window)
  • Read the exit clause in your T&Cs before leaving
The vast majority of residential contracts in Luxembourg are open-ended. If you don’t recall signing a fixed-term contract, you are almost certainly on a variable or default supply — you can switch freely. If in doubt, check your general conditions or call your current supplier to confirm your contract type.

Early exit fees on fixed contracts: according to the ILR, fees can only apply if two cumulative conditions are met: (1) you terminate a fixed-term fixed-price contract before its end date at your own initiative, AND (2) these fees were clearly disclosed before the contract was signed. If either condition is not met, no fee can be charged.

3. Step-by-step switching process

1
Gather your consumption data: annual consumption in kWh (on your last annual bill or via mycreos.lu), reference power in kW, and your commune.
2
Compare offers on the Switchr electricity comparator — total integrated annual cost (energy + network + taxes + VAT + fixed fee), contract type, and green electricity option.
3
Check your current contract’s exit conditions — fixed-term contracts may carry early termination fees.
4
Subscribe online with the new supplier — typically takes 5-10 minutes. The new supplier handles the cancellation with your old supplier. Do not cancel your old contract yourself before signing the new one.
5
14-day withdrawal right if you subscribed remotely (online or by phone) — you can withdraw without giving any reason.
6
Switch effective within 24 hours — no power cut, no technician, no change to your installation.
Sample switching timeline

Monday morning: compare on Switchr, subscribe online with supplier B.
Monday afternoon: supplier B submits the switching request to the network operator.
Tuesday morning: switch is effective — you are now supplier B’s customer.
~4 weeks later: you receive a closing bill from supplier A covering consumption up to the transfer date.

→ Zero power cut. Zero cancellation admin. Zero technical intervention.

4. What information do you need?

Information Where to find it Required?
Annual consumption (kWh) Annual settlement bill · mycreos.lu · Meter reading ✓ Essential
Reference power (kW) Electricity bill · mycreos.lu ✓ Essential
Full supply point address Your residential address ✓ Essential
Bank IBAN Bank statement or banking app ✓ For direct debit
Supply point number (EAN) Electricity bill (18-digit code) ~ Useful, often retrieved automatically

5. Special case: switching when moving home

Moving is a great opportunity to reconsider your electricity supplier. The process differs slightly from a same-address switch: when moving, you must cancel your old contract yourself — the new supplier only handles the contract for the new address.

If the home you’re moving into has no active contract, you will automatically fall onto default supply, at a tariff legally higher than market offers. For low-voltage customers, you have six months to sign a market contract before default supply ends automatically. Don’t delay — every month on default supply is a potential unnecessary overpayment.

Our guide moving and energy contracts in Luxembourg covers all the steps before, during and after your move — including gas contracts if you have both.

6. What if you have a fixed-price contract?

Situation Can you switch? Possible fees?
Fixed-price contract at end of term ✓ Freely, no fees None
Fixed-price contract mid-term, leaving at your own initiative ~ Possible but check T&Cs Possible if stipulated before signing
Supplier notifies a price change (within 30 days) ✓ Free exit, no notice required None — guaranteed legal right
Automatic renewal without proper prior notification ✓ Contestable, free exit None — notification obligation not met

7. Supplier changes your price: your rights

Mandatory legal obligation: your supplier must notify you of any price change at least 30 days in advance (for residential customers) and simultaneously inform you of your right to cancel the contract without notice and without fees before the new tariff takes effect. This right applies regardless of contract type — including fixed-term fixed-price contracts.

This free cancellation right does not apply to increases in regulated network tariffs set by the ILR (Creos, Sudstroum, Electris). Network charges are fixed by the regulator and apply to all suppliers and customers alike, independently of your supply contract.

8. What happens after the switch?

Event Typical timing Action required?
Switch effective 24 hours after request (since Jan. 2026) None — supply continues uninterrupted
Confirmation from new supplier A few days Check your email / customer account
Closing bill from old supplier 2–4 weeks after switch Pay any balance due; receive refund if overpaid
First bill from new supplier Per billing frequency (monthly or quarterly) Check that consumption and power data are correct

Frequently asked questions

Will switching electricity supplier cut my power?

No, absolutely not. Switching supplier is a purely administrative and commercial operation. The distribution network — cables, meter, fault management — remains managed by your local network operator (Creos, Sudstroum or Electris depending on your commune), independently of the supplier you choose. No technician visits, no cables are touched, and your supply is 100% continuous during and after the switch.

How long does switching supplier take in Luxembourg?

Since 1 January 2026, the switch must be completed within 24 hours of the request. The online subscription process typically takes 5–10 minutes. In practice, if you subscribe on a Monday morning, the switch is effective by Tuesday morning at the latest.

Do I need to contact my old supplier to cancel?

No, not for a same-address switch. The new supplier handles the cancellation with the old one as part of the switching procedure — you only deal with one party. Important: do not cancel your old contract yourself before signing the new one, otherwise you risk ending up without an active contract. Exception: when moving home, you must cancel your old address contract yourself, as the new supplier only handles the new address contract.

Are there any fees for switching supplier in Luxembourg?

For residential customers and small businesses, switching is free in the vast majority of cases. Early termination fees can only apply if you are on a fixed-term fixed-price contract, you leave before the end date at your own initiative, AND these fees were clearly stated in your general conditions before signing. In all other cases — variable contract, open-ended contract, or contracts where the price has been changed — no fees can be charged.

Can my landlord impose a specific electricity supplier on me?

No. The freedom to choose your electricity supplier is an individual right of the occupying consumer, whether tenant or owner. A landlord cannot impose a specific supplier in the lease agreement. The electricity contract is in the occupant’s name, and you are free to choose and switch supplier at your convenience.
