Alternative medicine in Luxembourg: supplementary health insurance cover 2026

The CNS does not reimburse alternative medicine in Luxembourg — osteopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic, naturopathy — leaving 100% of costs at your expense (€60 to €130 per session). Only a supplementary health insurance policy lets you recover all or part of these costs: in 2026, AXA OptiSoins (up to €700/year), Foyer medicis (up to €1,000/year), DKV EASY HEALTH and CMCM each offer specific cover for osteopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic and naturopathy.

CNS and alternative medicine: why zero reimbursement in 2026?

The Caisse Nationale de Santé (CNS) only reimburses procedures listed in the official healthcare nomenclature. This nomenclature does not include osteopathy, acupuncture performed by a non-physician, chiropractic, or naturopathy. A treatment is only covered by the CNS if a fee agreement exists between the CNS and the relevant professional body. To date, no such agreement has been reached for alternative medicine in Luxembourg.

It is important to distinguish between two situations. On the one hand, physiotherapy is reimbursed by the CNS at 70% on medical prescription (100% for children and in certain conditions) — it is therefore not considered an alternative medicine in Luxembourg. On the other hand, manual or natural therapies provided by practitioners without a CNS agreement remain entirely at the patient’s expense. The confusion often arises because some physiotherapists also practise osteopathy: the physiotherapy portion may be reimbursed, but the osteopathic element is not.

Acupuncture and CNS-registered doctors: A CNS-registered doctor who practises acupuncture may bill the consultation under a standard medical code. In that case, the consultation is reimbursed at the standard rate (88% for adults, 100% for children). However, if acupuncture is performed by a non-physician — even one with a traditional Chinese medicine qualification — the CNS pays nothing. Always check your practitioner’s status before your appointment.

The osteopathy profession was officially regulated in Luxembourg by the law of 21 August 2018 (amending the law of 26 March 1992 on the practice and enhancement of certain health professions) and the grand-ducal regulation of 23 September 2018 setting out conditions of practice, training requirements and recognition of foreign qualifications. These texts require a master’s degree in osteopathy (minimum 300 ECTS credits, i.e. 5 years of study) and a practice authorisation issued by the Ministry of Health. Regulation of the profession and CNS reimbursement are, however, two entirely separate matters. The ALDO (Association Luxembourgeoise des Ostéopathes) continues to negotiate with the CNS for a reimbursement code, without any concrete result to date.

Potentially high out-of-pocket costs: A patient who sees an osteopath 4 times a year (average rate: €90/session) faces an annual bill of €360 with no supplementary insurance. With the right policy, this amount can be largely or fully covered.

Alternative medicine practices available in Luxembourg

The Luxembourg alternative medicine market is dynamic, driven by an international population accustomed to these practices in their home countries. Here are the main alternative therapies available in the Grand Duchy and their regulatory status in 2026.

1

Osteopathy

A hands-on therapy focusing on musculoskeletal dysfunction (back, neck, joints) and associated functional disorders. Regulated profession in Luxembourg since 2018: only practitioners holding a master’s degree in osteopathy (300 ECTS, 5 years) and a ministerial authorisation may legally practise under the title of osteopath D.O. (law of 21 August 2018 and grand-ducal regulation of 23 September 2018). The ALDO is the representative body for authorised osteopaths in Luxembourg. Fee: €70–€130/session. CNS: 0%.

2

Acupuncture (Traditional Chinese Medicine)

A practice rooted in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), involving the stimulation of specific points on the body using fine needles. Widely practised in Luxembourg by TCM specialists. Note: if acupuncture is performed by a CNS-registered doctor, the consultation may be reimbursed at the standard medical rate. Fee for a non-physician TCM practitioner: €80–€125/session. CNS: 0% if practitioner is not a physician.

3

Chiropractic

A manual alternative medicine focused on neuromusculoskeletal disorders, particularly spinal dysfunction. Distinct from osteopathy in its spine-centred approach and specific adjustment techniques. Not formally regulated in the same way as osteopathy in Luxembourg. Fee: €70–€110/session. CNS: 0%.

4

Naturopathy

A holistic approach to wellbeing based on nutrition, medicinal plants, food supplements and relaxation techniques. Increasingly popular in Luxembourg. Unregulated profession. Fee: €60–€100/session. CNS: 0%.

5

Low-level laser therapy

A non-invasive technique using low-powered laser beams to reduce inflammation, support tissue healing and relieve chronic pain. Not to be confused with refractive laser eye surgery. CMCM explicitly includes laser therapy in its alternative medicine cover. CNS: 0%.

Switchr analysis: Luxembourg has a notable peculiarity: osteopathy has been a recognised and regulated health profession since 2018, yet it is not reimbursed by the CNS. This creates a significant coverage gap for patients, which private supplementary insurers are increasingly beginning to bridge. In 2026, all major Luxembourg supplementary health insurers (AXA, Foyer, CMCM, DKV) include alternative therapies in their plans — but with very different annual limits.

Alternative medicine session fees in Luxembourg in 2026

Alternative medicine practitioners in Luxembourg set their own fees, with no CNS price schedule. Costs vary depending on the practitioner’s qualifications, location (Luxembourg City versus the surrounding communes) and session length. The following ranges reflect current market rates in 2026.

Practice Min. fee Average fee Max. fee Typical duration CNS
Osteopathy €70 €90 €130 45–60 min 0%
Acupuncture (TCM) €80 €95 €125 30–45 min 0% *
Chiropractic €70 €85 €110 30–45 min 0%
Naturopathy €60 €75 €100 60–90 min 0%
Low-level laser therapy €50 €70 €90 20–30 min 0%

Sources: ALDO (osteopathie.lu), Doctena and Salonkee directories, Switchr — June 2026. * If the practitioner is a CNS-registered doctor, the consultation may be reimbursed at the standard rate.

For a chronic condition such as lower back pain, 3 to 6 osteopathy sessions per treatment cycle are common. At 4 sessions per year at €90 each, the annual cost amounts to €360 paid entirely out of pocket without supplementary insurance. This figure alone makes it worth exploring the cover offered by the various plans available in Luxembourg.

Switchr analysis: Foyer medicis confort stands out with the highest clearly published annual limit: 80% of costs up to €1,000/year, covering naturopath, osteopath, chiropractor and traditional Chinese medicine. AXA OptiSoins Privilège offers up to €700/year. CMCM stands apart through the absence of a medical questionnaire and family-wide cover (co-insured members at no extra cost), but its maximum documented limit is €200/year by combining RC (€100) and PrestaPlus (€100, stackable) at €50/session in each tier. For heavy users of alternative medicine (4+ sessions/year), Foyer confort and AXA Privilège offer the best documented financial cover.

AXA OptiSoins: up to €700/year for alternative medicine

At AXA Luxembourg (OptiSoins), alternative medicine cover is clearly set out in the official benefits table. The practices covered are: naturopathy, osteopathy, chiropractic and acupuncture.

Start

Entry-level protection, focused on hospitalisation. Does not cover alternative medicine.

Active

Includes dental, optical and alternative medicine cover. Reimbursement for alternative medicine: up to €500/year (naturopath, osteopath, chiropractor, acupuncturist).

AXA OptiSoins covers treatment throughout Europe and worldwide for any temporary stay of up to 60 days. Premiums are tax-deductible under art. 111 LIR. Claims management is handled via the MyAXA client portal (invoice photos, real-time tracking). For procedures not covered by the CNS such as alternative medicine, patients submit their paid invoice directly to AXA — no CNS statement required.

Medical questionnaire at sign-up: AXA requires a health questionnaire upon subscription. Pre-existing conditions may result in exclusions or premium loadings. Speak with an AXA adviser before signing up.

Foyer medicis confort: 80% up to €1,000/year for alternative therapies

At Foyer Luxembourg (medicis), only the medicis confort plan covers alternative therapies. The medicis hospi+ plan, which is limited to hospitalisation and surgery-related care, does not include outpatient alternative medicine.

The medicis confort plan covers the following alternative therapies: naturopath, osteopath, chiropractor and traditional Chinese medicine. Reimbursement is set at 80% of costs incurred, up to a maximum of €1,000 per year. This is the highest annual limit among Luxembourg supplementary insurers that have publicly published their figures.

Foyer also offers a Best Doctors service (international second medical opinion, access to a global network of specialists), the MyFoyer app for managing claims, and 24/7 assistance. For treatments not covered by the CNS such as alternative medicine, patients pay upfront and then submit their paid invoice via the MyFoyer app or by post.

Concrete example: 4 osteopathy sessions × €90 = €360. Foyer medicis confort reimburses 80% = €288. Your out-of-pocket cost: €72. With 8 sessions over the year at €120/session, the €1,000 annual cap covers a substantial portion of the total bill.

CMCM: alternative medicine cover in detail

The CMCM (Caisse Médico-Complémentaire Mutualiste), founded in 1956 with 280,000 members in Luxembourg, is the insurer that publishes the most transparent conditions for alternative medicine reimbursement.

The Régime Commun (CMCM’s basic cover) reimburses alternative medicine costs up to €50 per session, with an overall annual cap of €100 across all such treatments. Eligible treatments include: osteopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture and laser therapy. This cover applies to practitioners recognised in Luxembourg — in particular ALDO-member osteopaths holding a Ministry of Health authorisation.

By adding the optional PrestaPlus cover, members receive a further reimbursement for the same alternative therapies: up to €50 per session, with an annual cap of €100 — stackable on top of the Régime Commun. In total, an RC + PrestaPlus member can therefore be reimbursed up to €200/year (€100 RC + €100 PrestaPlus) for osteopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture and laser therapy sessions. For full details and exact conditions, consult the official CMCM statutes on cmcm.lu, which are the sole authoritative source. For example: if your osteopath charges €90, the CMCM reimburses €50 and the remaining €40 is your responsibility (per session).

CMCM advantage: no medical questionnaire, no age limit. Unlike AXA, Foyer and DKV, which all require a medical questionnaire at sign-up, CMCM applies no medical selection and has no upper age limit for joining. Contributions are calculated on a solidarity basis. A 3-month waiting period applies on first enrolment (12 months on re-admission). Co-insured members (spouse, children) are covered at no additional cost under the Régime Commun.

For families, CMCM has a distinct advantage: a family of 4 pays a single contribution and each member benefits from the alternative medicine limits. By contrast, private insurers such as AXA or Foyer charge a separate premium per family member. See our family health insurance in Luxembourg page for a detailed comparison.

DKV EASY HEALTH: alternative treatments included in outpatient cover

At DKV Luxembourg, alternative medicine cover is an integral part of the outpatient benefit. The official benefits table confirms that alternative treatments are included in the EASY HEALTH and PLUS HEALTH plans. The COMPACT HEALTH plan does not cover alternative treatment methods.

COMPACT HEALTH

Budget plan focused on hospitalisation and basic care. Alternative treatments not included.

PLUS HEALTH

Alternative treatments included. Full details are in the individual policy conditions — quote required.

DKV stands out for its value-added services: BEST CARE+ (access to a specialist within 5 working days, international second medical opinion) and coverage across the whole of Europe, extended for the first month to any country outside Europe. The easyAPP enables claims to be submitted directly from a smartphone, including for alternative medicine invoices (submit paid invoice, no CNS statement required).

Medical questionnaire required: DKV requires a health questionnaire upon subscription. Pre-existing conditions may result in exclusions or premium loadings. The maximum age for joining varies by plan. If you are switching from an equivalent policy held for at least 8 months, DKV may waive the waiting period — check this with your DKV adviser.

How to choose your alternative medicine cover in Luxembourg

Choosing the right alternative medicine cover depends on three key variables: how often you have consultations, which therapies you use, and your overall budget for supplementary health insurance. Here is the Switchr method for finding the right plan in 2026.

1

Calculate your actual annual spend

Multiply the number of sessions per year by your practitioner’s average fee. For example: 4 osteopathy sessions × €90 = €360/year. Foyer medicis confort would reimburse €288 (80%), AXA Privilège up to €700 (at actual cost, subject to policy conditions), CMCM Régime Commun €100. This simple calculation helps you identify the most cost-effective plan for your usage.

2

Check whether your practitioner is recognised

Each insurer may require practitioners to meet its own recognition criteria. For osteopaths, look for a D.O. practitioner who is a member of the ALDO and holds a Ministry of Health authorisation. Before signing your contract, ask your insurer for its specific requirements regarding practitioner recognition.

3

Compare annual limits, not just the premium

A higher monthly premium may be justified if the reimbursement limits are significantly greater. For moderate use (2–3 sessions/year), CMCM may be sufficient. For intensive use or varied therapies, Foyer medicis confort (€1,000/year) or AXA Privilège (€700/year) are better suited. Use our health insurance comparison tool to model your situation.

4

Factor in the tax benefit (art. 111 LIR)

Supplementary health insurance premiums are tax-deductible as special expenses under art. 111 LIR, up to a limit of €672 per person per year (this global ceiling covers all relevant premiums: life insurance, health/disability/accident insurance, personal liability, ASRD and personal loan interest). This tax benefit reduces the real cost of your cover. DKV, Foyer and AXA automatically issue an annual tax certificate. CMCM also provides an annual contributions summary.

5

Factor in waiting periods

All Luxembourg supplementary insurers apply a waiting period. At CMCM, the waiting period is 3 months for the Régime Commun and PrestaPlus on first enrolment (12 months on re-admission). At DKV, the waiting period may be waived if you are switching from an equivalent policy held for at least 8 months.

How to claim reimbursement for alternative medicine in 2026

The claims process for alternative medicine is simpler than for standard medical care, precisely because the CNS is not involved. There is no CNS statement to wait for — you simply submit your paid invoice directly to your supplementary insurer.

Insurer Submission channel Documents required Indicative timeframe
AXA OptiSoins MyAXA client portal (invoice photo), email, post Paid invoice — no CNS statement required Variable — contact AXA
Foyer medicis MyFoyer app, myfoyer.lu client area, post, Foyer agent Paid invoice with practitioner’s full details Variable — contact Foyer
CMCM CMCM app, cmcm.lu client area, post (32-34 rue de Hollerich, L-2971 Luxembourg) Paid invoice (practitioner name, date, amount, nature of treatment) A few days to 2 weeks
DKV easyAPP (invoice photo), easyAPP Home client area Paid invoice — no CNS statement required A few working days

What your practitioner’s invoice must include: For your insurer to accept the claim, the invoice must state the practitioner’s full name and qualifications (e.g. « osteopath D.O., ALDO member, Ministry of Health authorisation »), the session date, the nature of the treatment (e.g. « osteopathy session »), the amount paid, and proof of payment. An incomplete invoice may result in a rejected or delayed claim.

For French cross-border workers affiliated to the CNS, the process is the same: since the CNS covers nothing for these treatments, there is no statement to forward to the CPAM. The invoice goes straight to your Luxembourg supplementary insurer. For all aspects of cross-border health cover, see our cross-border workers’ health insurance guide.

Frequently asked questions — Alternative medicine and health insurance in Luxembourg

Is osteopathy reimbursed by the CNS in Luxembourg in 2026?

No. In 2026, the CNS (Caisse Nationale de Santé) does not reimburse osteopathy. The profession has been officially regulated in Luxembourg since 2018 (law of 21 August 2018 and grand-ducal regulation of 23 September 2018 amending the law of 26 March 1992), but this regulation has not led to CNS coverage. Only a private supplementary health insurance policy (AXA, Foyer, CMCM, DKV) can reimburse your sessions.

How much does an osteopathy session cost in Luxembourg?

Fees are set freely and range from €70 to €130 per session across the Grand Duchy. Rates are generally higher in Luxembourg City than in surrounding communes. A first consultation can reach €120–€130, while follow-up sessions typically cost between €70 and €90. As a rule, 2 to 6 sessions are needed per treatment cycle depending on the nature of the problem.

Which health insurance offers the best osteopathy reimbursement in Luxembourg?

Based on official documents published in 2026: Foyer medicis confort offers the highest limit (80% up to €1,000/year, covering osteopath, chiropractor, naturopath, TCM). AXA OptiSoins Privilège reimburses up to €700/year (Active: €500/year). CMCM reimburses €50/session up to €100/year under the Régime Commun, and up to €200/year by combining RC + PrestaPlus. DKV EASY HEALTH also covers alternative treatments, but exact amounts require a personalised quote. Use our comparison tool to find the right plan for your needs.

Does CMCM reimburse osteopathy and acupuncture?

Yes. CMCM reimburses osteopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture and laser therapy under its Régime Commun: up to €50 per session, with a global annual cap of €100. By adding the PrestaPlus option, you benefit from additional stackable cover of €50/session up to €100/year, giving a total of €200/year maximum (RC + PrestaPlus). Source: official CMCM brochure and cmcm.lu.

Does DKV Luxembourg reimburse naturopathy?

Yes, according to the official DKV Luxembourg product information document (IPID), the EASY HEALTH plan includes alternative treatments in its outpatient cover. The PLUS HEALTH plan also includes them. The COMPACT HEALTH plan does not cover alternative treatments. Exact limits are not published online and require a personalised quote. Get your quote here →

Does Foyer medicis reimburse naturopathy and Chinese medicine?

Yes, the medicis confort plan from Foyer covers: naturopath, osteopath, chiropractor and traditional Chinese medicine, at 80% of costs incurred, up to a maximum of €1,000 per year. The hospi+ plan does not cover outpatient alternative therapies.

Do I need a doctor’s prescription to be reimbursed for alternative medicine?

Generally, no. Since the regulation of osteopathy in Luxembourg in 2018, it is no longer mandatory to see a doctor before consulting an osteopath. Most Luxembourg supplementary insurers accept invoices directly from recognised practitioners without a prior prescription. Check the specific conditions of your policy, however, as some plans may require a referral for certain therapies.

How do I find an osteopath recognised by my insurer in Luxembourg?

Consult the ALDO directory (osteopathie.lu), which lists all D.O. osteopaths who are association members and hold a Ministry of Health authorisation. You can search by town or postcode. Before your first session, confirm with your insurer that the practitioner is eligible under the terms of your contract.

What waiting period applies to alternative medicine cover?

At CMCM, the waiting period is 3 months for all Régime Commun and PrestaPlus benefits (including alternative medicine) on first enrolment. On re-admission, this period is 12 months. At DKV, the waiting period may be waived if you are switching from an equivalent policy held for at least 8 months.

Are health insurance premiums tax-deductible in Luxembourg?

Yes. Premiums for your supplementary health insurance (AXA, Foyer, DKV, CMCM) are deductible as special expenses under art. 111 LIR, up to €672 per person per year (this global ceiling covers life insurance, health/accident/disability insurance, personal liability, ASRD and personal loan interest). In practical terms: even though osteopathy session costs are not deductible in themselves, the premium for the supplementary insurance that covers them is. For full details, see the Luxembourg Tax Administration — Art. 111 LIR.

Is acupuncture reimbursed if my GP performs it?

Yes. If a CNS-registered doctor performs acupuncture as part of a medical consultation, they may bill it under a standard medical code and the CNS will reimburse 88% of the fee for an adult (100% for a child). If the consultation is billed specifically as acupuncture by a non-physician TCM practitioner, the CNS pays nothing. Check with your doctor how they intend to bill before your session.

As a French cross-border worker in Luxembourg, am I covered for osteopathy?

If you are affiliated to the CNS (which is the case for private-sector employees in Luxembourg), your situation is identical to that of a Luxembourg resident: the CNS does not reimburse osteopathy. Your French CPAM also does not cover your routine care (you fall under the CNS). Only a Luxembourg supplementary health insurance policy (AXA, Foyer, CMCM, DKV) can reimburse you. For osteopathy carried out in France, check whether your Luxembourg supplementary insurer covers care outside Luxembourg — DKV EASY HEALTH, AXA and Foyer all cover Europe. Read our cross-border health insurance guide.
