What is fixed 5G internet?

Fixed 5G internet (Fixed Wireless Access / FWA) provides home broadband via the 5G mobile network — no fibre optic or cable connection needed. A 5G router is placed in your home (near a window or inside), captures signals from nearby 5G antennas, and distributes Wi-Fi to all your devices. Installation requires no works, no technician — insert a SIM card, plug in the router, and you’re online within minutes. Three mobile operators serve Luxembourg — POST, Orange and Tango (Proximus) — all of whom launched 5G in 2020 following ILR spectrum auctions. For an overview of all internet technologies available, see our guide on fibre optic in Luxembourg and our internet providers guide.

5G mobile is your smartphone plan using 5G on the go. Fixed 5G is a dedicated home internet subscription — more data included, a dedicated router distributing Wi-Fi around the home, and typically a longer-term commitment. Both use the same antennas and frequencies.

Fixed 5G vs fibre optic: an honest comparison

FTTH fibre optic

The reference technology
  • Speeds up to 8.5 Gbit/s (symmetric)
  • Very low and stable latency (< 5–10 ms)
  • Guaranteed speeds even at peak hours
  • Dedicated bandwidth, not shared with neighbours
  • Unaffected by weather conditions
  • Requires physical connection and technician
  • Unavailable at 16.2% of addresses (end 2024)
VS

Fixed 5G internet

Flexible alternative
  • Speeds up to 500 Mbps–1 Gbit/s (theoretical)
  • Latency typically 10–20 ms in practice
  • Immediate self-installation, no works needed
  • Available wherever there is quality 5G signal
  • Variable performance (shared antenna, weather)
  • No guaranteed minimum speed
  • Upload more limited than fibre
Our take: fibre remains the best option for intensive use (heavy uploading remote work, competitive gaming, simultaneous 4K multi-screen streaming). Fixed 5G is an excellent alternative for addresses not yet fibred, temporary connections, or simply when 5G coverage is strong at your home. For the vast majority of everyday use, the difference is imperceptible.
Example — family of 3 in the evening:
Netflix 4K (living room TV): 25 Mbps
HD series on tablet (child): 8 Mbps
Web browsing and social media: 5 Mbps
Simultaneous total: ~38 Mbps — even modest 5G conditions (100–200 Mbps available) comfortably cover this scenario. The difference with fibre is imperceptible here.
Criterion FTTH fibre Fixed 5G (residential)
Max download speed (theoretical) Up to 8.5 Gbit/s Up to 500 Mbps–1 Gbit/s
Symmetric speeds (upload = download) ✓ Yes ✗ No (upload more limited)
Latency < 5–10 ms (stable) 10–20 ms (variable)
Stability at peak hours ✓ Excellent Variable (shared network)

Who is fixed 5G best suited for?

New arrival / expat

You’ve just arrived in Luxembourg and need internet on day one without waiting 2–3 weeks for fibre installation. Tango 4G@Home or POST Data Box connect you immediately. More: internet for expats.

Temporary accommodation

Short-term rental, transitional housing. No-commitment offers (Data Box, 4G@Home) are perfect — no long contract, no complex cancellation. More: no-contract internet.

Waiting for fibre installation

Subscribed to fibre but waiting 2–4 weeks for installation. Tango provides a 4G SIM with 75 GB/month for 3 months on any GO Fibre subscription. POST also provides a temporary 4G router.

For intensive remote workers (continuous video calls, heavy uploading), competitive gamers (critical latency < 5 ms), or large families with simultaneous 4K multi-screen streaming, fibre remains preferable. Fixed 5G can however be very competitive in areas with excellent POST coverage. See our internet for remote work guide.

Installation and setup

1
Subscribe: sign up for the offer online or in store (POST or Tango). Collect your box and SIM card.
2
Insert SIM and plug in: insert the SIM card into the box. Plug the box into a power outlet.
3
Connect: connect your devices via Wi-Fi (SSID and password on the label under the box) or Ethernet cable. The connection is active within 5–15 minutes.
4
Optimise: position the router near a window facing the nearest 5G antennas. 5G signals (especially on 3.6 GHz frequencies) penetrate thick walls less effectively than 4G. Check the myilr.lu coverage map to identify the optimal antenna direction.

Limitations you should know about

Limitation Practical impact Most affected areas
Variable performance Speeds vary with time of day (peak hours), weather (rain attenuates radio waves), and physical obstacles (buildings, terrain, vegetation) Rural areas, Oesling (hilly terrain)
No guaranteed minimum speed Best-effort offers — no contractual minimum speed guarantee, unlike fibre All areas, especially at peak hours
Network saturation If many households in the same sector adopt fixed 5G simultaneously, antennas can become congested Densely populated areas
Limited upload Upload speed lower than FTTH fibre (typically 50–250 Mbps vs symmetric with fibre) Heavy impact for remote workers with large uploads
Not universally available 24.2% of the population isn’t covered by 5G ≥ 1 Gbit/s Northern Luxembourg (Oesling, Clervaux, Vianden, Wiltz)

With fibre, operators can contractually guarantee a minimum speed. With 5G, speeds are « best effort » — operators commit to maximum theoretical speeds, not minimums. For intensive professional use or very demanding households, this distinction is fundamental.

Fixed 5G as a bridge to fibre

POST’s POP Internet W is specifically designed as a long-term bridge to fibre. A home not yet eligible for fibre gets a complete Internet + TV + phone experience via 5G. When fibre becomes available at the address, only the 5G router is replaced — all other equipment stays, with zero service interruption. Track your zone’s fibre rollout: fibre coverage in Luxembourg.

With the copper phase-out planned by 2030, homes still on ADSL/VDSL will need to migrate to a VHCN technology (fibre, cable, or fixed 5G). Fixed 5G is explicitly recognised by the national strategy as a valid VHCN option.

Frequently asked questions — fixed 5G internet Luxembourg

Is fixed 5G good enough for Netflix 4K and TV in Luxembourg?

Yes, for the vast majority of use cases. Netflix 4K requires around 25 Mbps — even with modest 5G conditions (100–200 Mbps available), you have plenty of headroom for multiple screens simultaneously. POST’s POP Internet W even includes a TV decoder, confirming that POST itself validates TV usage on its fixed 5G solution.

Can I use the POST Data Box abroad?

No. The POST Data Box is limited to the Luxembourg national network and cannot be used for roaming. The same applies to Tango 4G@Home. These are fixed residential solutions designed for use in Luxembourg only. For international internet, refer to POST or Tango mobile plans with Europe options.

Will 5G replace fibre in Luxembourg?

No — the two technologies are complementary rather than competing. Fibre remains the reference for fixed connections thanks to its guaranteed symmetric speeds and stability. Fixed 5G is ideal where fibre isn’t yet deployed or when flexibility is needed. In practice, fibre will itself feed 5G antennas (backhaul), and both technologies will coexist and reinforce each other.

What is the latency of a fixed 5G connection in Luxembourg?

In typical conditions, fixed 5G latency in Luxembourg is 10 to 20 milliseconds — well below 4G (30–50 ms) and close to fibre (5–10 ms). This is fully adequate for web browsing, streaming, video calls and casual gaming. POST officially quotes sub-10 ms 5G latency in optimal conditions and well-covered areas.

Is 5G available across all of Luxembourg?

Not yet. 5G ≥ 1 Gbit/s coverage reached 75.8% of the population at end 2024 according to the ILR. Rural areas in the north (Oesling, cantons of Clervaux, Vianden, Wiltz) have less 5G coverage than urban areas. Check coverage at your specific address on myilr.lu before subscribing.
