What to do when you arrive in Luxembourg
The first thing to do when you are a new resident of the Grand Duchy is to compare service providers. Most contracts have a commitment period of 1 to 2 years. And given the complexity of changing operator, you might as well know that once you're set up, you'll never change again!
So you might as well choose the best subscriptions straight away.
That's why we've selected the best services available in Luxembourg, as well as a few good deals to share with you.
If you want more details, you can also consult the full comparators on this site. Here they are:

Why compare offers when you move to Luxembourg?
Even though there are only a few suppliers in Luxembourg, it's worth comparing offers:
- Prices can vary enormously from one provider to another, for the same service. Some providers are reputed to be expensive and others cheap, even though they offer more or less the same service. This is linked to the fact that, overall, there is little competition between market players.
- You may be charged a hidden fee. This is the case, for example, with fibre installation costs for Internet subscriptions. Some providers offer these charges. Others charge them (and they are usually written very small in the contract). Some consumers discover these charges (€100 to €200) on their first bill. If you can avoid paying them, all the better!
- The commitment periods may be different. Some suppliers offer 2-year commitments, others only one year. The shorter your commitment, the sooner you can switch to a cheaper deal.
- Some suppliers offer very attractive benefits in their basic packages: such as advantageous loan rates for a bank, protection when you're abroad for home insurance or Internet access from the first day of your contract for an ISP.
For all these reasons, we have created a comprehensive comparator enabling you to analyse most of the offers available on the Luxembourg market. The analysis is independent and the service is free!
Moving house, Internet, Energy... In what order should you do things?
Insurance
The first thing to do when you arrive in Luxembourg is toinsuring your property. You'll need cover from your first day, or even a little earlier if you're renting accommodation.
- Before you arrive, take out home insurance first. This is compulsory to cover your future home against various risks, and is generally the first thing you should do.
- Then, if you come by car, make a change car insurance contract. Cancel your policy taken out abroad and take out Luxembourg insurance (this is compulsory if you are a resident of the Grand Duchy).
Energy contracts
On the day you move in, you and the landlord or estate agent will need to read your electricity meter and/or gas meter. This information will enable you to change the name of your energy contract.
Read these figures, then...
- Open an electricity contractthe number of kWh recorded at the time of the move-in inspection
- Open a gas contract (if your heating or hob runs on gas, for example). If you don't know, ask your landlord: he'll be able to tell you.
Telecom subscriptions
Once you are in your home, you will need to access the Internet, watch television and make telephone calls.
- Take out a Internet subscription (online or in-store). If you like watching television, you can also take out a TV option with your Internet package. Some providers offer Internet access from the first day of your contract. You'll have a 4G box while you wait for the line to be opened or the fibre to your home to be installed.
- Take a mobile package with a Luxembourg operator. It's always better to have a local telephone number, especially if you intend to use it for your work (with business contacts or colleagues). It's also an advantage when it comes to getting a job or accommodation: as everywhere else, Luxembourgers are more likely to answer the phone when they see a "+352" number.
The bank account
This is the last thing you'll need to open. Unless your employer asked you for a Luxembourg IBAN when you signed your employment contract (in which case, this will be the first thing to do!).
In all cases, you will need a cLuxtrust certificate to access various digital services provided by the Luxembourg government (health reimbursements, online tax, family allowances). And only banks offer Luxtrust (Otherwise, you'll have to pay more than a hundred euros). So you might as well open an account in Luxembourg.
- Take the time to compare banks between them on our online bank comparator.
- Open a bank account in Luxembourg with the establishment of your choice, and benefit from a free Luxtrust.
Steps to take when moving to Luxembourg
If you are arriving in Luxembourg for the first time, you should be aware that there are a whole host of formalities to be completed.
For example, you will need to :
- Registering your arrival with the authorities and provide supporting documents
- Provide your full contact details and your new IBAN to your employer
- Recognising your marriage or civil partnership in the Grand Duchy (if applicable)
Already a Luxembourg resident? Take advantage and save
Comparing offers: a good way to save money
If you are already resident in Luxembourg, you probably have all the services you need in your current home. But did you know that you can save several hundred euros a year?
In Luxembourg, there are sometimes big price differences between Internet and mobile phone providers, and between energy suppliers (electricity and gas). The same applies to car and home insurance. The differences can amount to several dozen euros a month on a single contract. Over several years, that's a pretty hefty sum!
Since you're changing address and reviewing all your contracts, moving house is an important step. the ideal time to clean house and choose operators that offer the best value for money.
Which contracts should I terminate and how?
If you are moving to Luxembourg and have been resident here for a few years, you will probably no longer have a contract with most suppliers. You can then easily cancel your subscriptions and take out new ones.
Moving day
Start with the simplest and most obvious part of moving home: your energy contract. You can cancel your electricity or gas contract at any time, free of charge.
- Compare energy offers and ensure that the supplier of your choice offers contracts at your new address
- To make maximum savings: cancel your contract on the day you move, and send us a statement of your electricity meter. That way you won't have to pay an extra monthly instalment.
- Once you've arrived in your new home, take out a new energy contract.
Once you have settled into your new home
Once you have moved, you can take the time to cancel the following contracts:
- Your Internet subscription. You can apply for a new subscription at the new address with a better provider. Note that you can only cancel the contract if you are no longer committed (the commitment period for an Internet subscription is 2 years). If you took out your subscription more than 2 years ago, that's it!
- Your mobile subscriptionif you have completed your commitment period (for a SIM card only, the contract may be without commitment. However, there will be a 2-year commitment if you bought your package with a phone supplied by the operator).
- Your bank account : the new bank you choose will be able to change your bank for you. There is no commitment period: you can close your account at any time (except for certain life insurance policies or pension plans, for example).
- Your car and home insurance : insurance policies can only be cancelled within 30 days of the anniversary date of the contract. Otherwise, it is automatically renewed for a further year. If the anniversary date of your insurance contract is too far away, set up an alert on your phone to remind you to change your insurance at that time.
In all cases, cancellations must be in writing. They must be sent by registered post with acknowledgement of receipt, to prove that you have indeed requested the cancellation. You can find the cancellation procedure on the websites of the suppliers concerned.
Moving to Luxembourg: notifying your change of address
There are a number of declarations to make when you change your place of residence. Give us your new address...
- your employer (for sending your pay slips and contact details)
- your service providers (Internet, mobile, banking, energy, insurance). You can write an email to customer services or your account manager informing them of the new address.
- your bankby writing to your bank advisor
- at the municipal administration once you've moved: register with your new local authority as soon as you arrive. They will take care of deregistering you from your old commune. The government file will then be updated with your new address (for all tax-related communications, for example).
- to the Caisse Nationale de Santé (to receive your health reimbursement statements). Here's an article explaining how to change your address.
