Mini Casco Insurance in Luxembourg: Cover, Comparison & Guide 2026

Mini Casco (also known as « partial Casco ») is the middle-ground option between third-party liability insurance and comprehensive Casco cover in Luxembourg. It protects your vehicle against theft, fire, glass damage, natural events and animal collisions, without covering damage to your own vehicle in an at-fault accident. It is generally the best value option for vehicles aged 3 to 7 years worth between €10,000 and €20,000.

What is Mini Casco insurance in Luxembourg?

Mini Casco — also referred to as « partial Casco » — sits between third-party liability insurance (TPL only) and comprehensive Casco cover (all risks). It protects your vehicle against major risks that are outside your control as a driver: theft, fire, natural events, glass damage and animal collisions. It does not, however, cover damage to your vehicle if you are at fault in an accident.

All four licensed insurers in Luxembourg offer a Mini Casco-type product, though under different names. At LALUX, it is the « Sécurité » plan with two optional damage packs; at Foyer, it is the « Protection » plan within mobilé or the « Silver » plan within moov; at AXA, it is the « Active + Mini Casco » pack within OptiDrive; and at Baloise, it is the « Essentielle » plan with the Damage Pack add-on. Despite these naming differences, the core cover is identical: theft, fire, glass damage, natural events and animal collisions.

In practice, if your vehicle is stolen, damaged by fire, hit by hail, struck by a wild boar, or has its windscreen broken, Mini Casco will cover repair or replacement costs. But if you hit an obstacle or lose control of your car, damage to your own vehicle will not be covered — unlike with comprehensive Casco insurance.

A note on terminology: in Luxembourg, the terms « Mini Casco » and « partial Casco » are specific to the Luxembourg, Swiss and German-speaking markets. In Belgium, the equivalent is called « omnium partielle »; in France, it is known as « assurance intermédiaire » or « tiers étendu ». The term « Casco » on its own refers to full comprehensive cover.

Glass damage: what varies by insurer. The scope of cover differs. At LALUX, glass damage explicitly includes mirrors, sun visors and headlights (including xenon), in addition to the windscreen, side windows, rear screen and sunroof. For other insurers, the exact scope is set out in the policy terms and conditions — check before taking out a policy.

Mini Casco never covers at-fault accidents. If you hit an obstacle, another vehicle or lose control, damage to your own vehicle will not be reimbursed. For this cover, you need to take out a comprehensive Casco policy. This is the fundamental distinction between the two levels of cover.

What we observe on Switchr: Mini Casco is the most requested and most subscribed plan among Switchr users. It typically covers urban vehicles (city cars, saloons, estate cars) that are over 5 years old. Mini Casco is chosen for its strong coverage-to-price ratio. However, Switchr users with a new, leased, or premium vehicle tend to opt for Full Casco car insurance (comprehensive cover).

Mini Casco insurance prices in Luxembourg 2026

The cost of Mini Casco depends primarily on your bonus-malus rating, your vehicle’s value and engine size, and your driver profile. The ranges below are indicative estimates for an average-value vehicle.

Driver profile Bonus-malus level Est. monthly premium Est. annual premium
New driver Level 11 (100%) €60 — €90/month €720 — €1,080/year
Intermediate driver Level 7 (80%) €50 — €75/month €575 — €900/year
Experienced driver Level 0 (55%) €35 — €55/month €395 — €650/year
Excellent driver Level -3 (45%) €30 — €50/month €330 — €540/year
Young driver Level 11 + surcharge €90 — €130/month €1,080 — €1,560/year
Driver with malus Level 14–17 (130–175%) €100 — €160/month €1,200 — €1,920/year

Indicative estimates by Switchr — June 2026. Reference vehicle: value €15,000, average engine size. Actual premiums vary depending on vehicle, driver profile, options chosen and insurer. These ranges do not constitute a price offer.

Mini Casco typically costs 50% to 80% more than basic third-party liability insurance, but remains considerably cheaper than comprehensive Casco cover. The additional cost compared to TPL is justified by protection against theft, fire and natural events — incidents that can result in high costs regardless of your driving behaviour.

How to reduce your Mini Casco premium: your bonus-malus rating is the main lever. A driver at level -3 (45% of the base premium) pays roughly half what a driver at level 11 (100%) pays. Before taking out a policy, compare the full packages offered by each insurer: a plan that already includes driver protection or breakdown assistance may work out cheaper than a lower-priced plan to which you add those options separately.

🔹 Mini Casco

The best-value middle ground
  • Theft, fire and natural events covered
  • Glass damage (headlights included at LALUX)
  • Animal collision covered
  • Moderate cost (+50–80% vs third-party)
  • Ideal for vehicles aged 3 to 7 years
  • At-fault accidents not covered
  • Vandalism not covered
From ~€30–90/month
VS

🔹 Third-party

Minimum budget
  • Compulsory TPL covered
  • Basic legal protection
  • Lowest premiums on the market
  • No cover for your own vehicle
  • Theft, fire, natural events not covered
From ~€15–50/month
When should you choose Mini Casco? It is the best option for vehicles aged 3 to 7 years worth between €10,000 and €20,000. It covers major risks outside your control as a driver (theft, fire, natural events), while remaining cheaper than comprehensive cover. If your vehicle is worth less than €8,000–10,000, third-party cover may be sufficient. If it is worth more than €20,000 or is very new, opt for comprehensive Casco.
Vehicle value Indicative age Recommended cover Why
> €20,000 Under 3 years Comprehensive Casco Maximum protection justified by vehicle value; at-fault accidents covered
€10,000 – €20,000 3 to 7 years Mini Casco Best protection/cost balance for this value range
€5,000 – €10,000 7 to 10 years Mini Casco or Third-party Depends on your attitude to theft/fire risk and how you use the vehicle
< €5,000 Over 10 years Third-party The additional cost of Mini Casco is hard to justify for a low-value vehicle

Indicative benchmarks by Switchr — June 2026. These thresholds are indicative and depend on your personal situation and attitude to risk.

Who is Mini Casco right for?

Mini Casco is well suited to certain profiles and situations, but may not be the right fit for others. Here are the cases where it is the best option — and those where another level of cover may be more appropriate.

Vehicles aged 3 to 7 years in good condition

If your car is between 3 and 7 years old and worth between €10,000 and €20,000, Mini Casco is generally the best compromise. It guards against the main external risks without the added cost of comprehensive cover. → Insuring a used car

Experienced drivers with a good bonus rating

If you have a strong bonus-malus rating (level 0 or -3) and a careful driving record, Mini Casco is particularly relevant. You are statistically less likely to cause an at-fault accident (not covered by Mini Casco), but you remain exposed to external risks — theft, hail, animal collisions — which are covered.

Vehicles regularly parked outdoors

If your car is frequently parked in the open, it is more exposed to theft, bad weather (hail, storms) and impacts. Mini Casco covers these risks. If vandalism is your main concern, however, only comprehensive cover will protect you.

Frequent rural driving in Luxembourg

Luxembourg has abundant wildlife — wild boar, deer and foxes in particular. If you regularly drive on country roads, the risk of an animal collision is significant. This risk is covered by Mini Casco, unlike third-party cover.

⚠️

Not recommended: young drivers and very new vehicles

For young drivers (less than 2 years’ experience) or vehicles under 2 years old, comprehensive Casco cover is generally more appropriate. Novice drivers statistically have a higher rate of at-fault accidents, and the value of a new vehicle justifies maximum protection.

Leased or financed vehicles: leasing companies and car finance providers typically require comprehensive Casco cover. Read your finance agreement carefully before choosing your insurance level — a contractual obligation may require broader cover than Mini Casco provides.

Optional add-ons for Mini Casco

Mini Casco is a modular product. You can add guarantees to strengthen your protection based on your needs. Here are the main options available and their verified availability at each insurer.

Option What it covers Who it’s for Availability
Driver protection Injury, disability and death of the driver, even in an at-fault accident — TPL only covers third parties, never the driver Strongly recommended for all drivers Included at Baloise from the base Essentielle plan — optional at LALUX, Foyer and AXA
New-for-old / purchase value Reimbursement at purchase price or new-for-old value in the event of theft or total loss (rather than market value at the time of the claim) Recent vehicles; second-hand vehicles purchased within the last 3 years Optional at LALUX (3 years) and Foyer; included in AXA’s Mini Casco pack (new-for-old < 12 months, pre-loss value thereafter)
Breakdown assistance On-the-spot repairs, towing including from home (0 km), repatriation All drivers Included at LALUX (Top Assistance) and Baloise — optional at Foyer and AXA
Replacement vehicle Loan vehicle while yours is being repaired or after theft Drivers who depend on their car daily Limited inclusion at LALUX (5 days for breakdown, extendable) and AXA; Mobility Pack at Baloise (up to 60 days depending on level); Keep going at Foyer
Personal effects / luggage Items and equipment in the vehicle at the time of a covered incident Drivers carrying valuable equipment Included at AXA (€1,000) in the Mini Casco pack — My Items option at Foyer; Mobility Pack at Baloise (€500 to €3,000 depending on level); Luggage option at LALUX
Total loss Compensation in the event of total write-off, even in an at-fault accident (without upgrading to full Casco) Those seeking protection against total destruction without taking out comprehensive cover Optional at Foyer and optional at AXA (as a complement to the Mini Casco pack only)
Bonus protection Protects your material damage bonus after a claim Drivers with a strong bonus who want to safeguard it Baloise (Indemnification Pack, offered free if bonus -3) — LALUX (Bonus-Malus Joker available as option on Sécurité, included in Confort)

Switchr tip: before stacking multiple add-ons onto your Mini Casco policy, ask your agent for a comparative simulation. If you add driver protection + new-for-old value + breakdown assistance + replacement vehicle, the total cost may come close to that of a comprehensive Casco policy — which also covers at-fault accidents and vandalism. In that case, comprehensive cover may be the better overall deal.

The « Total Loss » option at Foyer and AXA: this cover provides compensation if your vehicle is totally written off, even if you were at fault. It does not cover partial repairs in at-fault accidents. It is an interesting middle-ground solution — ask your agent directly about the precise conditions (definition of total loss, caps and how claims are handled).

How to take out a Mini Casco policy in Luxembourg

Here are the key steps for choosing and taking out a Mini Casco policy suited to your profile.

1

Assess your vehicle’s current value

This is the first criterion for determining the right level of cover. Under €8,000–10,000: third-party cover may suffice. Between €10,000 and €20,000: Mini Casco is generally the best compromise. Over €20,000 or a very recent vehicle: consider comprehensive Casco. You can estimate your vehicle’s value through your garage or specialist valuation websites.

2

Gather your documents

You will need: your identity document, your driving licence, your vehicle registration certificate, and a bonus-malus certificate if you have previously been insured in Luxembourg. If you opt for new-for-old or purchase value cover, the vehicle’s purchase invoice will also be useful.

3

Compare offers from different insurers

The core guarantees are similar, but what is included varies significantly: LALUX includes breakdown assistance and headlight/mirror cover; Baloise includes driver protection; AXA includes personal effects and new-for-old value for recent vehicles. Compare the full packages, not just the prices. → Compare on Switchr

4

Read the policy terms before signing

Key points to check: the exact scope of glass damage cover (mirrors, headlights?), the claims notification conditions and deadlines, and any contract-specific exclusions. In Luxembourg, Mini Casco contracts generally carry no excess (€0), but check this point explicitly in your policy schedule.

5

Coordinate cancellation of your existing policy if switching

If you are changing insurer, cancel your existing policy in accordance with the Law of 27 July 1997 on insurance contracts, by registered letter with the notice period stipulated in your policy schedule. Make sure there is no gap in cover between your old and new contract. → Cancellation guide

Changing your level of cover mid-year: you can increase your cover at any time by contacting your agent (for example, moving from third-party to Mini Casco, or from Mini Casco to comprehensive). The premium is adjusted on a pro-rata basis. To reduce your cover, however, you will generally need to wait until your annual policy renewal date. → Switching car insurance

Frequently asked questions about Mini Casco

What is the difference between Mini Casco and comprehensive Casco in Luxembourg?

Mini Casco covers theft, fire, glass damage, natural events and animal collisions, but does not cover damage to your own vehicle in an at-fault accident. Comprehensive Casco also covers all damage to your vehicle — at-fault accidents, vandalism, and misfuelling depending on the insurer. With Mini Casco, if you hit an obstacle, you will not be compensated for your vehicle. With comprehensive cover, you will.

How much does Mini Casco insurance cost in Luxembourg?

Prices vary depending on driver profile and vehicle. As a guide: between €60 and €90 per month for a new driver at level 11 on the bonus-malus scale, and between €30 and €50 per month for an experienced driver at level -3. These ranges are indicative — the exact premium depends on the insurer, vehicle and options chosen. Use our comparison tool for a personalised estimate.

Does Mini Casco cover vandalism?

No. Vandalism (intentional scratches, deliberate damage) is not covered by Mini Casco. To be protected against this risk, you need to take out comprehensive Casco cover. Mini Casco only covers damage caused by unintentional external events: theft, fire, natural events, animal collisions and glass damage.

Am I covered if I hit a wild boar with Mini Casco?

Yes. Collision with wild animals (wild boar, deer, fox, etc.) is covered by the « animal collision » guarantee included in all Mini Casco policies in Luxembourg. Damage to your vehicle will be covered according to your contract terms. This cover is particularly relevant in Luxembourg, where accidents involving wildlife are common on rural roads.

Does Mini Casco cover hail damage?

Yes. Hail damage is covered under the « natural events » guarantee included in all Mini Casco policies in Luxembourg. Storms, flooding, falling rocks and other natural phenomena are also covered, subject to your policy’s terms and conditions. Hailstorms can cause significant damage to bodywork and glass.

Is there an excess on Mini Casco in Luxembourg?

In the vast majority of Luxembourg contracts, there is no excess (€0). This is a feature specific to the local market, unlike France or Belgium where excesses of €200 to €500 are common. The absence of an excess partly explains higher premiums, but guarantees full reimbursement with no out-of-pocket cost for covered claims. Nevertheless, check your policy schedule, as some contracts may include an excess for specific guarantees.

Are headlights and mirrors covered under glass damage?

It depends on the insurer. At LALUX, the glass damage guarantee explicitly includes mirrors, sun visors and headlights (including xenon). For other insurers, the exact scope is defined in the policy terms and conditions and may vary. Check with your agent before taking out a policy if this point is important to you.

Can I add driver protection to my Mini Casco policy?

Yes. The driver protection guarantee is available as an option at LALUX, Foyer and AXA. It is included as standard at Baloise from the base Essentielle plan. This cover is strongly recommended: it covers your bodily injuries in an at-fault accident. The driver is the only person not protected by compulsory TPL — only third parties (other drivers, passengers, pedestrians) are covered by TPL.

Which insurer offers the best Mini Casco in Luxembourg?

Each insurer has its strengths: LALUX offers the broadest glass damage cover (mirrors and headlights included) and integrated breakdown assistance. Baloise includes driver protection and breakdown assistance without any additional option. AXA includes personal effects cover (€1,000) and new-for-old value for vehicles under 12 months. Foyer offers the Total Loss option for compensation in the event of total destruction, even in an at-fault accident. The best choice depends on your profile and priorities. → Compare all 4 insurers

Can I switch from Mini Casco to comprehensive cover mid-year?

Yes. You can increase your level of cover at any time by contacting your agent or insurer. Switching from Mini Casco to comprehensive Casco takes effect promptly and the premium is adjusted on a pro-rata basis for the remaining period. To reduce your cover (switching from Casco or Mini Casco to a lower level), however, you will generally need to wait until your annual policy renewal date.
