An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a SIM chip soldered directly onto your smartphone’s motherboard during manufacturing. Instead of inserting a plastic SIM card, you download an operator profile onto the chip — typically by scanning a QR code or through an app.
| Feature | Physical SIM | eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Plastic nano-SIM card | Chip built into the device |
| Activation | In store or by post | QR code or app, remotely |
| Switching operator | Requires a new SIM card | Download a new profile |
| Multi-line | 1 line per SIM slot | Multiple stored profiles, 1–2 active at once |
| Risk of loss | Physical card can be lost | Built into device — cannot be lost |

eSIM is available from all three Luxembourg operators: POST (since March 2020), Orange Luxembourg (since March 2020), and Tango — included free of charge in all GO)) mobile plans. You can use eSIM alongside a physical SIM (dual SIM) on most recent smartphones.
2. Is my phone eSIM compatible?
Compatibility depends on your phone model and sometimes the region where it was purchased.
Apple iPhone
All iPhones sold in Europe from the iPhone XR (2018) onwards support eSIM: XR, XS, XS Max, all 11/12/12 mini/13/13 mini/14/15/16 series and their Pro/Plus/Pro Max variants, and iPhone SE (2020 and 2022). iPhone 14 and later sold in the USA are eSIM-only (no physical SIM slot). iPhones sold in mainland China are not eSIM compatible.
Samsung Galaxy
Samsung supports eSIM from the Galaxy S20 (2020). This includes S20 through S25 series, Galaxy Z Fold (from Fold 2) and Z Flip (from Flip 3), and Galaxy Note 20 series. Some models sold in the US, South Korea or Hong Kong may not support eSIM — always check with your operator.
Google Pixel and others
Google Pixel 3 and above (most European variants) support eSIM. Other brands with eSIM support include Motorola (Edge, Razr series), Fairphone 4 and 5, and select Sony Xperia and Xiaomi models sold in Europe.
Dial *#06# on your keypad. If an EID number (32 digits) appears alongside your IMEI — your phone supports eSIM.
No EID shown = no native eSIM support on your model.
A phone locked to a specific operator (e.g. purchased on contract in France or the UK) may block installation of another operator’s eSIM profile. Ensure your phone is unlocked before attempting to activate a Luxembourg eSIM.

If you’ve just arrived in Luxembourg and need a number immediately, Tango is the fastest option: sign up online, choose eSIM, and your line is active within minutes — no waiting for a physical card in the post. For POST and Orange, you’ll need to visit a store or call to get your activation QR code.
4. How to activate an eSIM in Luxembourg
On iPhone (iOS)
Go to Settings › Cellular › Add Cellular Plan. Scan the QR code provided by your operator. Name the line to identify it easily (e.g. « Tango work », « POST personal »). Set your default line preferences for calls, SMS and data.
On Android (Samsung, Google Pixel…)
Go to Settings › Connections › SIM Manager › Add eSIM (path may vary by manufacturer). Scan the QR code or enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code manually if provided. Follow on-screen instructions to complete setup.
An eSIM QR code can only be scanned once. Once used, it is invalidated. If you need to reinstall the profile (e.g. after a factory reset or device change), you must request a new QR code from your operator. Never delete an eSIM profile without contacting your operator first.
5. eSIM + physical SIM: dual SIM in Luxembourg
One of the main advantages of eSIM is running two lines on a single device — a common setup in Luxembourg, particularly for cross-border workers and professionals.
Physical SIM: French plan (+33 number) — family and friends in France
eSIM: Tango GO)) mobile M (+352 number) — local Luxembourg network, no daily roaming charges
Result: reachable on two numbers, optimal network in Luxembourg, no roaming fees.
How many eSIM profiles can you store? Recent iPhones can store up to 8 eSIM profiles, with 2 active simultaneously (1 eSIM + 1 physical SIM, or 2 eSIMs on eSIM-only models). Recent Samsung Galaxy S devices typically allow 5 stored profiles. You can switch between stored profiles in settings, without any physical manipulation.
6. eSIM for travel from Luxembourg
In Europe (EEA): your Luxembourg plan is enough
Thanks to the EU « Roam Like At Home » regulation (EU 2022/612, valid until 2032), your Luxembourg plan works in all EEA countries (EU + Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) at no extra cost — whether on a physical SIM or eSIM. No travel eSIM needed for trips to France, Belgium, Germany or Spain. See our full roaming guide for Luxembourg.
Outside the EEA (USA, Canada, Asia…): travel eSIM is the best option
For non-EEA destinations, roaming charges on your Luxembourg plan can be very high without an add-on. A travel eSIM lets you activate a local data plan at your destination without swapping your physical SIM — your Luxembourg number stays active for calls and SMS.
Orange Luxembourg’s Hello eSIM app lets you buy travel eSIMs for over 100 destinations directly on your smartphone — no store visit needed, and available to non-Orange customers too. Ideal for trips to the USA, Canada or Asia.

Is eSIM free with Luxembourg operators?
At Tango, eSIM is included free of charge in all GO)) mobile plans — just select it when signing up online. At POST and Orange, eSIM is also available without a surcharge compared to a physical SIM. Always check the current terms with your chosen operator when subscribing.
Can I get a Luxembourg number on eSIM if I live in France, Belgium or Germany?
Yes — you don’t need to be a Luxembourg resident to subscribe to a Luxembourg mobile plan. Cross-border workers can have a +352 number on eSIM while keeping their home country number on their physical SIM. Tango allows fully online sign-up with eSIM activation — no Luxembourg address required for the eSIM itself.
Does eSIM work with 5G in Luxembourg?
Yes — eSIM and 5G are independent technologies. If your phone supports 5G and your plan includes it (all Tango GO)) mobile plans, POST POP Mobile from plan S upwards), you’ll access 5G via eSIM in covered areas, exactly as with a physical SIM. See our guide on 5G in Luxembourg.
Can I keep my number when switching operators with an eSIM?
Yes — number portability works exactly the same way with eSIM as with a physical SIM. When signing up with your new operator, indicate that you want to keep your existing number. The operator handles the transfer, and once complete, your old eSIM profile is deactivated and a new one installed. See our number portability guide for details.
